Advent Calendar Alternatives

Advent Calendar Alternatives

UNPOPULAR OPINION - I’m not an advent calendar convert…
There are a few reasons why I don’t usually take part in the concept of advent calendars (in the most common form)…

  1. Environmentally - Most of the time, advent calendars aren’t particularly environmentally friendly - and if they’re filled with ‘gifts’, they are often miniatures or with a raft of things you don’t need or won’t use. (not all of course! there are exceptions)

  2. They’re indulgent - which is fine in itself, but there’s so much abundance at this time of year - I just don’t think we need ‘gifts’ for every day of the month.

  3. I see this as an opportunity to do something different, meaningful.
The spirit of Christmas is about giving, connection, and reflecting on what truly matters. Instead of indulging in daily trinkets, I prefer to find ways to do something for others.

Here are 7 Alternative, meaningful ways to celebrate the countdown to Christmas.

  1. Random Acts of Kindness Advent – While Good Tuesday decided not to offer one this year, it's easy to create your own. Each day, complete a small act of kindness. Whether it's writing a Christmas card to your postie or picking up litter during your daily commute, these thoughtful gestures can spread joy.

  2. Reversed Advent – Instead of opening a door each day, set aside something to donate. By Christmas, you'll have built a box of items to donate to a food bank or other charity, spreading festive goodwill to those in need.

  3. New Recipe Advent – Try a new dish every day, whether it's for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This fun challenge can indulge your family while teaching you new cooking skills. Make it a group activity, getting everyone involved in the kitchen.

  4. TEDTalk Advent – Commit to a daily dose of inspiration by watching a TEDTalk. Focus on personal growth, creativity, or any other topic that resonates. This can be a refreshing way to enrich your mind during the festive season.

  5. Eco Swaps Challenge – Challenge yourself or your house mates to make a new eco-friendly swap each day. Whether it’s switching to reusable bags or cutting out single-use plastic, you’ll build sustainable habits that last beyond the holiday season.

  6. Better Ally Challenge – Every day, take a small action to become a better ally. Educate yourself on different communities, amplify marginalised voices, or commit to supporting inclusive causes. Maybe even just read a chapter of a book on this topic each day. This advent challenge fosters reflection and advocacy during the holidays.

  7. Daily Donation – Each day, donate a small amount of money to a different charity. Use the funds you would have spent on a gift-style advent calendar to support causes close to your heart.

  8. Daily Music Discovery - find a new artist to listen to each day, and spend some time enjoying their music. A great way to have a cultural experience and discover new music artists for the next year ahead.

These alternative advent ideas can add deeper meaning and creativity to the countdown to Christmas.

Whilst there really are some lovely Advent Calendars on the market - and we’re NOT HERE TO JUDGE anyone - but just want to offer up an alternative way of celebrating the countdown to Christmas.

Will you do advent differently this year?

Happy Silly Season!
